On the Cauberg in Valkenburg stands the resistance memorial of the province of Limburg, near the place where the resistance fighters Jan “Sjeng“ Coenen and Joseph “Yoop” Francotte were shot on September 6, 1944, i.e. a few days before the liberation of Valkenburg, after being severely mistreated. The Limburg resistance fighters celebrated the liberation of Limburg there every year at the beginning of September, although the liberation in North Limburg took considerably longer. These celebrations no longer take place any more, as all but a few of the resistance fighters have probably died in the meantime.
The memorial consists of a chapel with a carillon. In that chapel there are on three walls the names of about three hundred people, who died because of their resistance to the German occupation. [1]
The chapel is dedicated to Our Lady of the Good Dive. On the middle wall there is a picture of this symbol of the people in hiding in Limburg, also known as divers. It was invented by Lodewijk Bleys [2] from Roermond. Next to it the later added names of fallen resistance fighters. A poster was made of this symbolic figure, which many people in hiding (dutch: onderduikers) [3], including non-Catholics, hung above their beds.
